Using VIPERS at home

When teaching reading comprehension in class, we will be basing lessons on the reading ‘VIPERS’.

VIPERS is a way to support children's comprehension, from The Literacy Shed (search Literacy Shed Plus - READING VIPERS for more information on their website).

VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum.  They are the key areas which children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts. It stands for:

Vocabulary

Inference

Prediction

Explanation

Retrieval

Sequence (KS1) or Summarise (KS2)

The VIPERS can be used at home when reading with your child. Use the PDFs below to look at the sorts of questions your child will be asked in class. These are the types of questions you can ask at home with your children too. You don't need to ask every single type of question, every single time you read.
