Learning for the Head, Heart and Hand

Term 2

We are very excited about the term ahead as we lead up to Christmas.

English: Within our English learning this term, we will be delving into the world of ‘Intrepid Exploration’ by learning about the life and work of both Matthew Henson and Ernest Shackleton. Within this topic the children will write a range of pieces, from a full biographical recount to an explorer’s diary entry and a persuasive letter to a newspaper report. We will also be broadening our knowledge of trailblazing females within the explorers’ world!

Maths: We will be continuing their learning on multiplication and division and moving on to Fractions. We will recognise and find equivalent and improper fractions and convert mixed number.

Science: Forces. We will look at the force of gravity acting on the Earth and an object. We will identify the effect air and water resistance and friction have on a surface and recognise pulley, lever and geared mechanisms.

Geography: The Alps. We will be looking at where in the world the Alps are located and the physical and human characteristics of them.

RE: We will be learning about what places of worship are for and about their functions, with a focus on the Anglican, Baptist, Hindu and Jewish religions. Our main question will be, If ‘God’ is everywhere, why go to a place of worship?

Music: In music this term, the children will be exploring the social question: How can music bring us together? Their musical focus will be on melody and harmony.

PSHE: This term, we will be thinking about keeping safe and managing risk as we navigate the world around us. We will also be exploring articles 9, 10 and 11 of our UNICEF Rights.

Computing: This term we will be developing our understanding of how technology can be used to create music. We will look into loops, creating soundtracks and debugging programming.

Art: The children will learn all about complimentary colours and how to create vibrancy within a piece of artwork – all inspired by pop art! This will culminate in the children creating a wonderful self-portrait in different styles.

Design and Technology: Our DT focus this term will be creating pop-up books to gift to our Year R classes, just in time for Christmas! In the construction of these books the children will be using a mixture of structures and mechanisms to create a pop-up book of great interest.

PE: The children will enjoy yoga lessons in the performing arts studio on Thursdays. On Tuesdays, they will enjoying Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) on the field/playground. Please do ensure that children come with appropriate clothing for each activity.

Please ensure that children are prepared for all weathers during this time of the year and that all uniform/coats are named. Your child needs to bring their named water bottle daily as well as a healthy snack. Please hear your child read daily and ensure that times-tables are being practiced regularly – all facts of all tables should be seucre for children in Year 5. Your child needs to quiz on AR every time that they finish a book.
