We hope you have had a restful break and are excited about the term ahead! This is what we will be learning about in each subject this term:
Writing:
This term our writing lessons will be based around the Titanic. The children will learn the fascinating history of this disaster, discuss what factors contributed to this tragedy and debate what lessons should be learnt. Throughout the course of this term, the children will write in a range of styles including newspapers and letters.
Reading:
In Reading, Year 5 will be studying Wonder by R.J. Palacio, a powerful and inspiring novel about Auggie Pullman, a boy with a facial difference who starts mainstream school for the first time. Through the story, children will explore themes such as kindness, friendship, empathy and acceptance. They will develop key reading skills including retrieval, inference, prediction, summarising, comparing texts, identifying themes, distinguishing between fact and opinion, and using evidence from the text to justify their ideas and opinions.
Maths:
In Maths this term, we will be learning all about negative numbers, decimal numbers and calculating with these as well as converting between units of measure. All of this will culminate in some wonderful investigations, in which the children will have fun applying all of their learning from this term and the previous.
Science:
In Science, we will be undertaking our Animals Including Humans topic. This will involve exploring and comparing the characteristics of all main animal groups (mammals, insect, amphibians and birds) and plant life, whilst gaining an understanding of the life cycle or reproduction process of different species. This will also allow us to take a look into the life and work of Sir David Attenborough to gain an appreciation for the natural world.
Geography:
We will be learning all about Oceans. The children will learn to locate different oceans on a map and understand how these oceans are used for all sorts of reasons including trade, travel, employment and food. We will also learn about the threats our oceans are facing and how we can protect them. Finally, we will undertake field work near the Stour.
PSHE:
This term is a busy term for our PSHE learning. We will be covering our Relationships and Sex Education topic alongside our Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco education topic. Please be sure to read the relevant communication about this as it comes to you.
Computing:
The children will be learning more about the Mars Rover including how it transmits images through space before using CAD to redesign a rover's tyres.
Art:
In Art, the children will be learning about Picasso. They will discuss his works of art and experiment with Cubism before creating their own mixed media masterpieces!
DT:
Our final DT topic of the year is our cooking unit. This will be a chance to look at healthier options when making meals and to prepare a meal in our pupil kitchen.
RE:
In RE this term, Year 5 will continue exploring the question "What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?" Children will learn about the importance of charity (Zakah) and why helping others is a key part of Muslim life. They will also explore why Muslims undertake the pilgrimage of Hajj, how Muslims show respect and commitment through the Five Pillars of Islam, and where people seek guidance and advice in their lives. Throughout the unit, children will be encouraged to make connections between Muslim beliefs and their own values, commitments and experiences.
French:
In French, Year 5 will be learning about the Solar System. Children will learn the names of the planets and other key features of space, develop their vocabulary to describe them in more detail, and practise asking and answering questions. They will also take part in role-play activities, speaking as astronauts preparing for a space expedition, before bringing together everything they have learned at the end of the unit.
PE:
This term PE will continue to be on Tuesdays and Fridays.
As always, please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have question.
Best wishes,
Mrs Coxall, Mr Godden and Mrs Lloyd
