Learning for the Head, Heart and Hand

Term 5

Thursday 25th April 2024

This week, we did something super cool! We finished our chart where we coloured in 100 acts of kindness! We are proud of ourselves for showing compassion towards each other as well as always working collaboratively together. Next week, we'll start a new one!

In science, we looked at different plants and flowers and discussed what's the same about them and what's different. We know that all plants need water, sunlight, warmth, and love to grow big and strong. We also know that they use their roots to drink and eat! It is important to not pick flowers and plants because we will be cutting them off from their roots and they will no longer be able to eat and drink to stay healthy and strong.

In mathematics, we've been counting by tens all the way up to 50! We have also been investigating partitioning by 10's and 1's as well as using our number lines once again to find one more or one less than a number between 0-50. Oh, and we have had lots of fun estimating the position of numbers on them up to 50. We are also beginning to learn about tall, short, and long things.

For English, we've been rewriting a story called "The Leopard's Drum." We are using describing words like adjectives, action words like verbs, and comparing things with similes. Like, "The Leopard is as big as a tree!" - said Orla.

We are also learning how to make words plural. Sometimes we just add an 's' but other times we need to add 'es' - there are rules!

In DT (that's design and technology), we've been super creative! We are sewing pouches to keep our special treasures safe.

In PE, we are getting ready for sports day! Go Team Fox!

Lastly, lots of us earned team points this week for doing awesome learning. Yay!

In English, we have been enjoying Rumpelstiltskin, focusing on the character of the boastful miller. Boastful, as defined by Oscar, means always talking about what you have. Leo contributed, describing it as thinking you are the best and better than everyone else. We have also explored common contractions in our SPAG lesson this week… "I can't wait for the bank holiday weekend; it's going to be so much fun!" - we all said.

In our computing lessons, we continued exploring keyboards and their functions. We had a go at writing a character description of Rumpelstiltskin. We used capitals, italics, and had a play with the size and colour of our text.

Meanwhile, in math, our focus shifted to understanding weight, with Bertie explaining that weight is made up of mass. We discussed how some objects are heavier or lighter than others. We all agreed that we shouldn’t be fooled; just because something is smaller, it doesn’t always mean it is the lightest.

Our science class took us outdoors in search of flowers, where we measured them using cubes. For instance, we found that a daisy measures three cubes in length while lying down on the ground, while a stinging nettle stands tall at 27 cubes. This activity helped us grasp concepts of length, height, and comparison.

In art, we unleashed our creativity by designing prints using paint and shapes, setting the stage for next week's activities.

In PE, we honed our skills in anticipation of the upcoming sports day.
