Inclusion at Lady Joanna Thornhill Primary is central to our ethos and culture. We believe inclusion is about ensuring children feel that they belong, are genuinely engaged and are meaningfully connected to their community. We value all of our children as individuals, giving equal access and opportunity by meeting the needs of each child where they are at and building from this start point.
Relationships are at the heart of this vision; we understand that significant learning can only happen with significant relationships, and as a result we value and nurture these with care.
At Lady Joanna Thornhill Primary, we believe that all children have the right to:
An education which enables them to become full, independent and active members of the community.
Be supported in developing the tools and strategies to become an independent learner
An education that is broad and balanced with access to the curriculum.
Have their contributions and achievements recognised.
Be seen as individuals with differing interests, knowledge and skills.
An education where support, if needed, is seen as an entitlement rather than a special addition.
Careful monitoring and assessment of their individual needs in an appropriate context, ensuring that there are high expectations and appropriate targets.
For children with identified Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities, we are dedicated to ensuring that they can access appropriate learning opportunities, and we seek to support both the child and their family, at the earliest possible opportunity. We hold a firm belief that quality first teaching (with SEND children learning in class alongside their peers, whilst being a key focus for the class teacher) will deliver the best outcomes for these pupils.
