Lady Joanna Thornhill (Endowed) Primary School

Learning for the Head, Heart and Hand

How will I know how my child is doing? Communication with parents.

How will I know how my child is doing at Lady Joanna Thornhill Primary?

At Lady Joanna Thornhill, we believe that parents’ involvement with their children’s education is essential. Research by the EEF (Educational Endowment Foundation) has found that parental involvement results in a child making at least 4 months of additional progress in each calendar year. Whilst our job is to teach your child effectively, you play a crucial role in celebrating your child’s successes and valuing learning for the ‘Head, Heart and Hand’.

In designing our reporting system, we have thought carefully about the sort of information you need to best support your child and have sought the views of parents and our teaching staff to establish this system. Within this, we are also mindful of the careful balance between reporting and sharing information and excessive teacher workload.

The timetable below outlines at least one ‘formal’ mechanism each term of sharing information about your child’s progress. We have supplemented this with a wide range of other opportunities to see your child’s learning in action and find out more about what they are doing in school. Timetabled communication with you:

Term 1New Teacher presentation: An information sharing session which gives you an opportunity to meet your child’s class teacher(s), learn about the curriculum, year group expectations and special events for the new academic year.
Term 2Parent consultations: A one-to-one meeting where we will communicate how your child is progressing, highlighting their strengths, areas for development and how you can help at home as well as sharing pastoral information. This will also include an indication of whether your child is working within the expected level for their age

Term 3

Brief Written Report: This report provides a mid-year update which follows on from the Term 2 parent consultations. Achievements and areas for development midway through the year will be discussed.
Term 4Parent consultations: This meeting will consider the progress made during the year and learning priorities for the last term.
Term 5&6

End of Year Report: This report looks at your child holistically – their engagement, social skills and areas where they have excelled during the year. It will also give you information about whether your child is at the expected level for Reading, Writing and Mathematics alongside standardised scores from testing (in Key Stage 2). In addition it will provide a report on your child’s progress and efforts in all subjects within the National Curriculum.

Open Evening: This is an informal opportunity to visit your child’s current classroom, look at displays of children’s work and speak to the class teacher to celebrate their year. You will also be able to visit their next teacher and see their new classroom.

Informal Communication:

Class teachers will use a range of informal methods to communicate how your child is doing:

  • Sharing photos and examples of children’s work on the website.
  • Certificates awarded in Celebration Assemblies.
  • Information shared via a learning platform eg. Tapestry.
  • Brief conversations at the end of the day or via telephone or email as necessary.
  • Meetings requested by either the class teacher or parent to discuss a specific concern.
