In Reading Practice, we have begun to read a book called Wonder. It is about a boy called August who is home schooled and his mum wants him to go to a school but his dad wants him to choose what he can do. Eventually, he agrees to visit the school and he has a tour with some students called Jack Will, Charlotte and Julian. August is nervous about going to school because he doesn't know if people will tease him for the way he looks. We are looking forward to finding out what happens in the story.
In English, we have been learning about the Titanic. We have just finished writing a letter written by a first-class passenger to their friend, using an informal tone and expanded noun phrases to describe the passenger's surroundings and experiences.
In French, we have been learning about the planets of the Solar System and how to describe them. We know that adjectives in French have to 'agree' with the gender of the noun. This means that, if the noun is feminine (we know this because the determiner is 'la' not 'le'), we add an 'e' to the end of the adjective, unless it already ends in an 'e'. For example, 'le soleil est chaud' means 'the Sun is hot' and it is masculine. 'La lune est petite' means 'the Moon is small' and it is feminine, hence the 'e' at the end of 'petite'.
In Maths, we have started learning about negative numbers, which are numbers below zero. We see negative numbers in the real world in lifts, temperature measurements, depth, elevation and co-ordinates.
We have been preparing our Year 5 dance for the Summer Fair this Saturday. We won't tell you what the song is, though, because we'll keep it a surprise!

In Reading, we have nearly finished the book, Wonder, and have been practising answering 3 mark questions on the book. We have been using the VIPERS to help us grow in comprehension.
Yesterday and Tuesday afternoons, we had our transition afternoons in Year 6. We got to know each other and our new teachers, Mrs Kemp and Mrs Whitewood, and we did some art. We also had a chat about the roles and responsibilities of Year 6. We are feeling a bit nervous but also excited to be in Year 6 next year.
Last week, we went to the Science Museum in London. We took four trains and two underground trains and it was very hot! The Science Museum is huge and we saw the space exhibition and watched the Wonder Show, which featured three cool experiments. We also walked down to the River Stour to survey the level of plastic pollution, as we have been learning about oceans and waterways in Geography.
We now only have two weeks left of Year 5! Our favourite memories are:
