Thursday 4th May

Our topic this term is the Ancient Egyptians and we are loving it so far!

In English last week we started writing our Nile River reports. This week we have been writing poetry dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian sun god Ra - our work is simply stunning. We are so proud of the progress we have each individually made in writing since Year 2, and have been celebrating our friends' progress this week too!

We have had magical Maths lessons this week, earning stickers for solving problems involving volume and capacity. We are looking forward to making real potions this weeks.

We also made seed bombs, as we are celebrating Sun day. We are looking forward to tomorrow (Friday 5th May) when we get to showcase some of our work in assembly and to show off our crowns!

Thursday 23rd February

This week we have been having lots of fun:

- making model Mammoths from milk bottles and brown paper. They look really realistic!

- investigating different types of soil, and getting muddy in the process.

- starting our unit of writing based on The Twits. We will be focusing on playscripts this term and getting dramatic! Can't wait!

Thursday 9th February

This week the Blackbirds are proud to share some of their best work so far:

- We wrote a final, published version of our 'Stone Age Boy' diary extracts. They are full of imaginative language and interesting ideas.

- We used soft pastels to create cave paintings showing bison and handprints.

- We created an effective stone age cave wall to display our work using spray paint and our own hands.

Thursday 19th January

This week we have begun reading about the very interesting life of Mary Anning, who famously discovered the entire fossil of an Ichthyosaurus. The book is called 'Stone Girl, Bone Girl.'

We have also been busily practising for our amazing, aquatic Class Assembly performance all about Oceans. We've been learning lines, rehearsing a special song and getting our groove on with some dance moves!

We can't wait to perform it to you on Friday morning...

Thursday 12th January

This week we began working on new text in English: Stone Age Boy, by Satoshi Kitamura. This fascinating picture book follows the story of a young boy who falls down a hole during a woodland walk and awakes in the Stone Age! We are using the story to inspire some descriptive diary extracts, writing in role as the time-travelling boy.

In Maths, we have been learning to multiply two digit numbers and tackling some really tricky problems with great enthusiasm!

We started a new unit of work in Music (learning and performing Pop songs using our voices and instruments) and we also began a new topic in French: naming musical instruments!

Thursday 5th January 2023

Happy New Year!

We are happy to be back and excited about what is to come in Term 3.

Some of the lessons and events we are looking forward to, include:

- the Stone Age!

- Rocks and Fossils

- Handball in PE

- School Disco!

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2023.

Love the Blackbirds.

Thursday 15th December

It's Chriiiiiiiiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas!

This week we finished our narrative poems based on the book 'Coming Home' by Michael Morpurgo. We enjoyed writing the story of a little robin travelling home for Christmas. It is some of the best writing we have produced so far!

We've also completed our Ocean themed Gonks - these will be coming home for Christmas too! We're really proud of them.

Of course - it's not all work and no play at this time of year! We have been working in teams to create epic paper chains to decorate the classroom and we are looking forward to Christmas dinner later today. Yummy!

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

With love from the Blackbirds.

Thursday 1st December

It's December! Hooray! We are getting in the festive spirit in class this week, practising our Christmas song - Feliz Navidad - to be recorded later this term.

In other news, we have made a 'shopping list' for our Ocean themed Gonks. We are looking forward to making them soon. We have been reading about Sea Turtles this week in English and learning about why they are an endangered species. We will be writing our own persuasive information text about these beautiful creatures today.

Thursday 17th November

It's been a great week in Blackbirds class. We've been learning in the great outdoors, getting muddy and soaking wet - fantastic! From making animal shelters during Outdoor Learning time, to participating in a 2.6km cross-country run, the Blackbirds have been very active this week!

We have also been exercising our brains, tackling some tricky new concepts in Mathematics. This week we have been working on subtraction with exchanging.

Finally, we are excited to announce that we have elected our class School Council representatives: Thomas and Jaza.

Congratulations!

Thursday 24th November

We've had another busy and varied week in Blackbirds. In English we have been writing an exciting (and spooky) account of diving around a shipwreck, using the HMS Titanic as our stimulus. In Maths, we have continued our work on subtraction.

We have also enjoyed making a group shelter during our Outdoor Learning time and preparing patterns for making our Ocean Themed gonks.
