Learning for the Head, Heart and Hand

How we celebrated World Book Day at Lady J.

We are celebrating the anniversary of World Book Day with the message for all children ‘you are a reader‘! This is a day full of exciting, celebratory ways to promote reading for pleasure on World Book Day, and all-year round.

Author, Lucy Strange, runs workshops with years 5 and 6.

Lucy won the 2014 Montegrappa First Fiction Prize, and has gone on to publish four novels with Chicken House in the UK.  Her books have been awarded Waterstones' Book of the Month, The Daily Telegraph's Number 10 in the Top 50 Books of 2016 and is included in Amazon's Best Children's Book of the Year.  She visited us to run workshops about her most recent book, Sisters of the Lost Marsh. During the workshop, Lucy spoke about how she became an author and where she gets her inspiration from for her books. The children learnt so much that they can use for their own writing. She then did a fascinating question and answer session before signing some books that the children purchased.

Author and illustrator, Katherine Turner, runs workshops with Years 1 and 2

Katherine spoke about her journey of becoming an author and illustrator of children’s books. She read them her first picture book, ‘Daddy’s Brilliant Beard,’ and answered questions from the children regarding the book and her journey.

She then ran a workshop around character development where they discussed the importance of creating a main character that is both likeable and relatable. The children brainstormed characteristics taken from both our experiences and our imagination to create a made-up character. They  wrote down how the character might look, and what abilities and strengths it could have. They then looked at fun and imaginative ways to name their characters. Each child then created their own characters and gave them names.
